Well, I guess it was inevitable that I eventually make the jump over here from jbf. Hahahahaha. Ummm....so yeah. Here's chapter one. Two's comin tonight and who knows. Chapter three might even make an appearance today. Lol. I'll try my super hardest the keep this updated in a timely manner...but we all know how that goes. Lol. Let me know what ya think!

Chapter One
“You’ve got your overnight bag?”
“Yes.”
“And your laptop?”
“Yes.”
“Cell phone charger?”
“Amy, look at my car. I have everything I own in the trunk and backseat. If I own it it’s in there.”
“Well sorry for not wanting you to forget anything. I mean, it’s not like you can call me and have me bring your toothbrush across the hall. You’re moving across the freaking country!”
Liz felt a tug at her heart strings as she saw tears filling her best friend’s eyes. “Oh, sweetie.” She pulled Amy into a tight hug. “Thank you for helping me pack.”
“It’s just, you’re going so far away and I’m gonna miss you so much,” Amy sobbed.
“But we’ll talk every day and I’ll see you over winter break. Plus, you’re gonna be coming out after graduation which is only a few months away.” Liz swallowed, trying to stifle her own tears. She couldn’t let herself break down now. She had lived with Amy for four years, ever since they’d met at freshman orientation at NYU. Unfortunately a major change from psychology to graphic design had put Amy a semester behind Liz. They meant that they would need to be separated for a few months.
“I know but you’re gonna be out there in California with the sunshine and the celebrities and I’ll be here with the snow and the smelly hot dog guys.”
“But you love snow and gross street food.”
“Who am I gonna hang out with?”
“Umm, the rest of our friends.”
“I don’t like the rest of our friends.” Amy pouted.
Liz couldn’t help but laugh. “Yes you do.”
“I know. But you’re my favorite.”
They both laughed and Liz spun her car key on her finger. “So…how jealous are you that I’m gonna be living with your boyfriend?”
“Ugh! I forgot about that! Another reason why you shouldn’t leave!”
“Ames, he’s like my cousin. And even if I didn’t have strictly family-type feelings for him I wouldn’t do that to you.”
“Oh, I know that! It’s just not fair that my two favorite people get to live together without me.”
“Five months and we’ll have our own fabulous apartment and we’ll laugh at how silly we’re being right now.”
“Yeah, yeah. You’d better get going before you get even sappier and I’m forced to slap you.”
“One more hug?”
“Of course.” They embraced quickly.
“I’ll call you when I stop for the night.”
“Alright.” Amy stepped back and watched as Liz got into the driver’s seat of her old, black Ford Contour. “Be careful! Drive safe!” she yelled over the sound of the engine starting after Liz rolled down her window.
“I will. Bye!” Liz waved as she pulled out of their apartment building’s parking lot. She honked and took one last glance in the rearview mirror before looking ahead. She smiled to herself. Looking ahead. That’s exactly what she’d been doing when she planned the move, the reason she’d accepted her dream job.
* * * * *
Liz locked the apartment door behind her and dropped her keys on the table by the door. “Ames! I’m home!”
“I’m in my room!” she yelled back.
“How was class?” Liz asked as she opened the fridge and pulled out a bottle of water.
“Pretty good. I forgot to check the machine when I got in. You mind?”
Liz took a sip of her water as she pushed the flashing red button on their shared answering machine. “Good morning. This is Eric Young from the Los Angeles Chronicle. I’m calling in regards to our meeting last Thursday. I have a few more questions for you about the position we discussed. Please call me back at…” Liz could hear him still talking but he might as well have been speaking Chinese because she didn’t understand a word of it. He had called her back. After meeting with at least ten of her classmates at the job fair two weeks ago, the editor of the Chronicle’s sports section had called her back. She looked at the clock and tried to remember how many hours difference there was between the Eastern and Pacific time zones. She knew that she was either three or four house ahead, putting L.A. at either three or four in the afternoon. She quickly found their cordless phone and sat down at the small kitchen table with a pen, pad, and a copy of her resume.
Amy could hear Liz talking to someone in her “business” voice. She walked into the kitchen and leaned her shoulder against the fridge. She tried to judge how well the conversation was going but Liz hung up before she had a real chance to figure it out. Liz dropped the phone and then her head onto the table. “So…who was that?”
“Eric Young,” Liz mumbled into the table.
“From the L.A. Chronicle?!” Amy asked excitedly. Liz nodded. Amy sat down next to her friend at the table and lifted some of Liz’s dark brown hair away from her face like a curtain. “What happened? What’d he want?” Liz hadn’t been able to stop talking about meeting this Eric Young guy since she’d met him at the job fair. Amy figured that his message would make Liz happy, the exact opposite of what she now seemed to be.
“He got my portfolio. He read all my articles.”
“And?”
Liz picked her head up. “And they’ve got an opening in the sports department and he just offered it to me.”
“Lizzy! That’s amazing!” Amy practically threw herself onto Liz with an enthusiastic hug. “You told him that with you’ll take it, right?”
“I said I’ll think about it but…I think I’m gonna turn it down.”
“What!?” Amy yelled. Almost immediately there was a loud thumping beneath their feet, their downstairs neighbor banging on her ceiling with a broom.
“Sorry, Mrs. Melman!” they yelled in unison.
“Liz, why would you turn it down? That job’s all you’ve talked about for days. And you’ve been trying to get a staff position for months!”
“It’s just not a good time.”
“It’s the perfect time.”
“No, it’s not. I would have to move all the way across the country within three weeks.”
“So?”
“So we were supposed to go out there together after you graduate and that’s not for another five months. That’s the plan. It’s always been the plan.”
Amy rolled her eyes. “Oh for crying out loud. Really? You’re gonna use the fact that I had a few academic changes and have to graduate late as an excuse to not take your dream job?”
“No, I’m using the fact that I can’t afford to live out there by myself as an excuse to not take my dream job. I’m working two jobs now and can barely keep paying my half of the rent.”
“Well, actually, that isn’t one hundred percent true.”
“What d’you mean?”
“The rent went up last year and…well…I didn’t have the heart to tell you.”
“What!?”
“It’s not a huge deal. Being able to live with my best friend is totally worth the few extra hundred bucks a month.”
“I can’t believe you did that.”
“A simple ‘thank you’ would suffice.” Amy smiled, quite pleased with herself.
“I will be paying full rent from now on, ok?”
Amy rolled her eyes. Being what Liz affectionately called a trust-fund baby, she couldn’t understand why it was such a big deal. She would pay the entire rent herself, and gladly so, if Liz let her. She only used the money for necessities or to help friends, anyway. “Whatever. So when are you gonna call this Young guy and tell him that you’ll take the job?”
Liz laughed sadly. “I thought I just explained that I can’t take it.”
“What would you need to take this offer?”
Liz sighed. She knew Amy wouldn’t give up easily. “A place to live would be a start.”
A wide smile slowly crept across Amy’s lips. “You could always stay with someone until I graduate.”
“Like who?”
“Like Andy.”
“He lives with three other people already.”
“Exactly. You’re so quite they wouldn’t even notice you were around.”
“Gee, thanks. He’s just so busy…”
“So you’d have the whole place to yourself.”
Liz thought for a moment. It was a definite option even if she would feel funny asking him for such a huge favor. Of course, Andy would say yes. As long as she’d known him she’d never heard of him turning someone down when they needed him. When her older brother came home from his first day of eighth grade bragging about his new best friend, Liz never would’ve guess it would lead to the lifelong bond that existed between her family and the Schmidts. Summer vacations to the shore together, walking into each other’s houses without knocking, Liz knew Andy’s parents as more of an aunt and uncle than any of her true aunts and uncles. They were so close that Liz felt comfortable enough setting him up with her best friend, a relationship that had been going strong for over a year despite the long distance factor and age difference.
“Call him,” Amy urged gently as she pushed the phone toward her. “Cause if you don’t then you know that I will.”
Liz nodded and giggled. “Please. Like you’re not gonna call him as soon as I hang up.”
“Well, duh. Just call him so that I can.”
* * * * *
Two weeks later, Liz was driving across the Nevada/California border. She had left everything and almost everyone she knew behind her on the east coast. She was twenty-four years old and on her way to what she hoped was a bright future in sports journalism. She also hoped that the fact that the whole venture wasn’t happening exactly the way she’d planned wasn’t some kind of terrible omen.

Yo check it out! double update! lol. lemme know what you guys think! comments would be amazings!

Chapter Two
Liz rolled down the window and inhaled the chilly night air. She was doing everything in her power to stay awake. As if it were trying to encourage her, the GPS kept updating her n how close she was to her destination. She wished she had stopped at a hotel when she’d had the chance. Of course, it would be kind of silly to stop now with only four miles to go.
Finally she found the right street. Liz was actually surprised that she could still read at four-thirty in the morning let alone connect what she was seeing with what the GPS was telling her to do. She crept down the residential street, trying to find the house. She was glad Andy’s record label had decided to upgrade them from a two bedroom apartment to a house because at this point the guys would’ve had to carry her up the stairs. She turned up the only driveway with outside lights on, hoping she had the right house. And then the front door opened and there he was.
“You made it!” Andy said excitedly as he walked toward her car.
“Took me long enough, huh?” she joked as she got out of the driver’s seat.
“You’re right on time,” Andy said as he pulled her into a tight hug. “How was the drive?”
“Completely exhausting,” she replied. “Who knew sitting down for hours would knock me out so much?”
“Do you have like an overnight bag or something?”
“You and your girlfriend are really big on the overnight bags, huh?”
“We know the importance of being prepared for sleepovers.”
“Please tell me I wasn’t supposed to find the dirty joke in there. It’s too early for dirty jokes.”
“It’s never too early for dirty jokes,” he answered as he opened p the back door of Liz’s car and pulled out a small suitcase. “This’ll hold you over until tomorrow, right?”
“Yeah. Thanks.”
“Come on. I’ll show you to your suite.” Andy laughed and wrapped his arm around Liz’s shoulders, leading her into the house. They walked through what Liz assumed was the living room to a small room that contained an opened futon, a computer desk, and a tv. “Here it is. Sorry it’s so…tiny and futony. It was the only room left with a locking door which I figured would be kind of important.”
“It’s fine. Perfect, actually. Thanks again for letting me crash here.”
“Lizard, you know it’s no big deal.”
“It is, though.” She paused. “And please never ever call me Lizard in front of the guys.”
“Don’t want it catching on?”
“Hated it fifteen years ago, still hate it now.”
Andy laughed. “Well, I’ll let you get settled in. Oh, and the bathroom’s across the living room. And I’m the first door on the right upstairs if you need anything.”
“I’m sure I’ll be fine but thanks. Goodnight.”
“’Night.” Andy walked out of the room, closing the door behind him.
Liz sat down on the futon. It was actually pretty comfortable and reminded her of how tired she really was. She managed to kick off her sneakers, take off her glasses, and pull off her jeans before passing out.
* * * * *
Liz blinked against the sunlight that was pouring into her room through the window. “Ugh,” she grumbled. “That’s gonna need to be taken care of.” She sat up and grabbed her glasses off of the desk. All of her bags were piled up in the middle of the room. She blushed, realizing that at least Andy had seen her in her undwear. She found some pajama pants in her overnight bag and pulled them on before pulling her long brown hair into a loose ponytail. She listened at the door, trying to hear what the guys were doing or if they were even home. The she heard laughter erupt from the other side of the door. She couldn’t help but feel a little nervous. Sure she’d met the guys in Andy’s band before but it was usually only for a few minutes before or after a show and besides, this was different. She was living with them now. Plus, it had been a full year since she’d seen them last. She decided to text Amy before venturing out into the living room.
As soon as she turned on her BlackBerry, text messages started pouring in. They were all from Amy and they were all asking where she was and if she’d arrived safely. Liz sat back down on her bed and tapped out a message. Hey! I’m here. Sorry I didn’t call or txt. It was late.
Jesus, Liz! I thought you’d driven off the Grand Canyon!
You could’ve called boyfriend.
I did this morning. I finally found out you were ok a few hours ago.
Sorry.
So how’re the guys?
Haven’t gone out yet. Still in my room.
What’re you waiting for?
I dunno.
You know them.
I don’t know them in my pajamas.
Stop being stupid or I’ll send Andy in there after you.
Fine. Ttyl.
Later.
Liz sighed and stepped out into the living room. She could hear laughter coming from the kitchen but didn’t hear Andy’s voice. She paused and considered going back to her “room” until she was sure he was there but decided against it. They were her new roommates after all. They were bound to see her in her pajamas and glasses eventually. Why delay the inevitable?
Liz walked into the kitchen to find two slightly scruffy-looking men sitting at the table drinking coffee. The one with longer, curly hair was facing her and his eyes brightened over the rim of his mug when he saw her walk into the room. “Hey, roomie!” he said with a welcoming grin.
“Good morning,” she said with a relaxed laugh as she sat down on one of the empty chairs between them. Liz racked her brain, trying to remember their names, something that probably would’ve been easier if she’d had more than four hours of sleep. Luckily, the curly haired one seemed to know what she was thinking because next thing she knew he was extending his hand for her to shake. “I know we’ve met before but I’m Jason.”
“I’m Liz.”
“And I’m Mike,” the other guy said.
Liz could feel herself blushing as she shook his hand. It was a little bit rougher than Jason’s hand and something about his chocolate eyes made her heart speed up a bit. She quickly thought of something to say before she started drooling. “So, is there any coffee left?”
“Totally. How do you take it?” Mike asked, starting to get up.
“No, sit. I got it. I kinda live here so I should find where everything is. But thanks though.”
Liz heard chuckling from behind her and realized that there was more than just the three of them in the kitchen. “What’s so funny?” she asked as she grabbed a mug off of the drying rack by the sink. She looked to her left and saw who she recognized as the drummer smiling under the hood of his sweatshirt.
“Nothing. It’s just…let’s say the words ‘but thanks though’ aren’t really said to Mike too much,” he answered as he flipped one of the pancakes cooking on the skillet in front of him.
“Oh yeah?” Liz laughed as she poured coffee into her mug and glanced over her shoulder at Mike who was staring daggers at hoodie-boy, a sight that made her laugh even harder.
“Alexander,” he said, offering his hand but not looking away from his cooking breakfast.
“Elizabeth,” she replied, her tiny hand totally enveloped by his. She took advantage of his preoccupation to give him a quick once-over. “So…shorts with a hoodie, huh?”
Alex laughed. “Am I breaking some kind of breakfast fashion rule?”
“I don’t think so. I was just wondering if you’re actually tall enough to have your upper half in a different temperature zone than your lower half.” She sipped her black coffee and waited for some kind of response. When she got none, Liz shrugged and sauntered back to her seat at the table with Jason and Mike.
“Naw, it’s cause I generate a lot of heat from my lower half,” Alex finally retorted. He carried a plate piled high with pancakes over to the table and sat down across from Liz, a smug and challenging look on his face.
“Aww, did you have to think real hard about that one or is your reaction time just delayed this early in the morning?” she shot back with a mischievous grin.
“Bro, I think you just got burned!” Mike laughed as he gave Liz a high-five.
“Yeah, whatevs,” Alex said, trying not to laugh. “So when’d you get in?”
“Like four hours ago,” Liz answered as she grabbed a pancake and put it on her plate.
“Holy sh.it!” Jason said. “You drove all the way out here from New York and got in four hours ago and you’re awake?”
“Uhhh, sort of. I’m not at fully functional but I’m vertical.”
“I am impressed.”
Mike took a swig of his coffee. “You originally from the city?”
“Nope, Maryland. I just moved to New York for school and decided to stay since my friends are all there and stuff.”
“Oh right! You’re the one that hooked Andy up with wifey!” Mike remembered.
Liz laughed. “That’d be me.” She took a bite of her breakfast and swallowed. “So I feel like I’ve got a lot of questions at me so let’s just get it over with.” She rolled her eyes and laughed.
“You ready for the lightning round?” Jason asked her.
“Absolutely. Go.”
“Age?” Mike asked, making both Alex and Jason roll their eyes.
“Twenty-three.”
“Boyfriend?” Jason asked.
“Nope.”
Alex smiled. “Girlfriend?”
“Uh, not my thing.”
“Favorite alcohol?” Alex asked.
“Dude, it’s my turn!” Mike argued.
“Bro, we don’t have formal turns in the lightning round.”
“Yes we do! If we didn’t it’d be chaos!”
“Jay, do we have formal turns in the lightning round?” asked Alex.
Suddenly the front door opened and closed. “Hey,” Andy said as he walked quickly to the fridge, dressed in work-out clothes, covered in sweat, and a little bit out of breath. He opened the fridge and pulled out a huge jug of water and threw his head back to drink it. He put it down and looked at his friends sitting at the table. “Oh, hey!” he exclaimed when he realized Liz was there. “You’re up!” He walked over to her and hugged her around the shoulders from behind before kissing her on the cheek.
“Ew! Andy, get off me! You’re all smelly and sweaty!” she protested. “Where were you?”
“Running,” he answered, grabbing a pancake off of the stack with his hand. He rolled it into a tube and took a huge bite. “Not bad, Noyes. Save me a few. I gotta go jump in the shower.” He flew out of the room.
“Uh, when did he start smoking crack?” Liz asked.
“He’s always like that when he gets in from running,” Alex explained.
“He should be back to normal when he gets out of the shower,” Jason added.
“Weirdo,” Liz mumbled under her breath.
“So what’re your plans for the day?” Mike asked, smiling at Liz as she sipped her coffee.
“Um, I’m pretty open, I guess. I should probably get unpacked and settled in and all that.”
“Probably take a while. What’s in those suitcases? A weight set?” Alex teased her.
“Uh, and you know how heavy my suitcases are how?”
“We carried them in this morning. Nice smiley face panties, by the way,” he said nonchalantly. He was trying to get a rise out of her, to see how much teasing she could take.
“Hope you got a good look at them cause that’s the only time you’ll ever see ‘em,” Liz shot back. She smiled widely, letting everyone at the table know that it was all in good fun.
Mike and Jay were in stitches by the time Andy walked back into the kitchen, freshly showered and wearing jeans and a white v-neck. “What’s everybody laughing at?” he asked as he sat down in the only available chair.
“These two,” Mike said. He patted Andy’s shoulder. “You didn’t need to worry, bro. She keeps up with all our bulls.hit just fine.”
“You were worried about me?” Liz asked Andy, giving him her best puppy dog eyes.
“I wasn’t worried…”
“He made us promise to be nice to you,” Jason said matter-of-factly.
“Well, let me assure all of you, I can more than hold my own with a bunch of guys. I grew up with two older brothers so I’m pretty hard to crack.”
“It’s true,” Andy said. “She’s totally like one of the guys.”
“Hey!” Liz shoved his arm. “Just ‘cause I love watchin football and can bust balls with the best of ‘em doesn’t make me one of the guys. It just makes me an awesome chick.”
“Oh, I like this. This is good. Good things are about to happen in this house,” Jay said.
“I concur.” Alex winked at her and raised his coffee mug to Liz before taking a sip.
“You do know what this means, right?” Mike asked.
“What?” His devilish grin made Liz laugh nervously.
“We gotta celebrate! We are going out tonight!”

Chapter Three
“Jeez, look at him go,” Liz said as she, along with Mike, Andy, and Alex, stared at Jason flirting with a girl at the end of the bar. “Isn’t that, like, the third girl tonight?”
Alex shrugged. “Jay’s the man.”
“But these girls…I mean, they had to have seen him making out with that first girl,” she said, unable to look away.
“Jay’s got some kind of magical ability to woo a woman even if he was just making out with her sister two seconds earlier,” Mike tried to explain. “And it’s not something that can be taught, either. Trust me.”
“So I guess if I end up hooking up with any of you guys I should just accept the fact that it’s gonna be Jay, huh?”
“Uh, no,” Andy said with a laugh.
“Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. What’s that supposed to me?” Liz asked.
“Yeah, what’s that supposed to me?” Mike repeated.
“Don’t even think about it,” Andy said to Mike, his tone still joking but slightly serious now. “I don’t need to deal with that level of awkward.”
“Why would it be awkward?” Liz asked. She sipped her Bacardi and Coke and raised an eyebrow at Andy.
“You want the whole list?”
“Oh, yes, please.”
“Number one: the walls of our house are waaay too thin. Two: I don’t need to be in the middle of any fights that could occur as a result of said hookup. Three: roommate relationships never work out. Four: if I thought you would be a good match for any of these guys I would’ve set you up already. Five…well I can’t really think of a fifth thing right now but it’s there somewhere.”
“Wow. That’s quite a list. And to put it together like that on the spot,” Liz said.
“So you agree with me, right?”
“Andrew, darling, I appreciate you looking out for me. I really do. And I know that our brother-sister relationship would make any sexual encounters between me and one of your band mates totally weird for you.” She finished off her drink with one final gulp and firmly put the tumbler glass down on their table. “But if you think you can tell me who I can and can’t date or sleep with or whatever, then you’ve got another thing coming.” She grinned at Andy’s slack-jawed expression. “Now, who wants to dance?”
“Sure, I-” Alex started. Before he could finish his thought, Mike and Liz were already headed for the dance floor. “Or not.”
“She’s somethin’, huh?” Andy asked, shaking his head before taking a long drag from his beer.
“She’s right, ya know.”
“Yeah, I guess.”
“Plus, if you tell a girl she can’t do something that automatically makes her want to do it more.” Alex patted Andy’s shoulder and took a sip from his own beer bottle. He looked over his shoulder toward the dance floor and instantly caught sight of Mike and Liz dancing close together.
Liz laughed and let her hands rest at the base of Mile’s neck as they danced. “Where did you learn to dance?”
“Just comes naturally, I guess,” he answered, trying to be as smooth as possible. “Why?”
“Well…you kinda dance like a stripper.”
Mike started laughing so hard he had to take a step back from her. “A stripper? Really?”
“A male stripper.”
“Well you’re keeping up with me. What’s that say about you?”
“That I’ve been to a lot of bachelorette parties?”
Mike put his hands on her hips, testing his boundaries and feeling them move back and forth. He bit his lower lip and pulled her against his pelvis. They grinded together, getting totally lost in the thumping beat of the music. Liz looked over Mike’s shoulder and saw how hurt Andy looked. She stopped dead in her tracks and took Mike’s hands off of her hips. “What’s wrong? Did I do something? Was that not ok?” he asked when he saw the look in her brown eyes.
“Huh? Oh, no. It’s just…this was supposed to annoy him, not make him look all sad.”
“Who?” Mike turned around and only saw that Andy and Alex were ordering another round of drinks for the table. “Andy?” Liz nodded. “He doesn’t look upset…”
“Look, I’m sorry I got you involved in my stupid, petty…whatever this was.”
“No, it’s fine. Don’t worry about it.”
“Well, it was sort of bit.chy. I mean, I hope I didn’t lead you on or anything…”
Mike laughed and casually wrapped his arm around Liz’s waist as they walked back to the table. “Seriously, you are talking to the biggest flirt ever. It’s not a problem.”
“Well in that case, we should totally do that again soon ‘cause it was really fun!”
“Any time you want,” Mike said with a huge smile on his face. They sat back down at the table with Alex and Andy and after a few seconds they were all back to laughing and talking over their drinks.
Liz couldn’t hide her exhaustion for very long, though. She tried to hold in a yawn but Alex noticed her covering her mouth. “Sh.it, you’re goin’ on four hours of sleep.”
“And it’s starting to catch up with me,” she admitted.
“Why don’t you two go find Jay and me and Liz’ll go outside and call a cab,” Andy suggested as he stood up.
“Aww, you guys don’t have to leave, too. I can get myself home. I feel like I’ve been majorly co.ck blockin’ all night, anyway. Maybe when I leave someone other than Rosen can get some action.”
“No, it’s ok. I mean, I’m action free of course and we’ve got a meeting tomorrow morning,” Andy said. “Come on. Let’s get you some fresh air before you go passin’ out on me.” He wrapped his arm around her shoulders and guided her outside. Liz was surprised by how warm it was outside. L.A. weather, beautiful as it was, would definitely take some getting used to. Andy called for a cab then shoved his phone back into his front jeans pocket. “So, I’m sorry about that whole ‘you can’t date my friends’ thing in there. It’s just that I love you like a little sister and I guess that means I’m sort of protective of you.”
“Andy, it’s fine. I should’ve just agreed with you instead of being a spiteful b.itch, dancing with Michael like that.”
“The whole reason, though, is none of these guys are really the relationship type and I know that’s kind of your thing.”
Liz was taken aback. “What? When I have ever talked to you about my love life?”
“Umm, my mom might have called me when she heard you were moving out here.”
“And lemme guess, my mom keeps your mom informed on all of my personal business.”
“Hey! I’m sure your mother tells you all about me!”
“No, your girlfriend tells me all about you! And usually it’s waaaaay more information than I need in my life.” She laughed and he pulled her into a hug.
“I just don’t want to see you get hurt. I mean, if you…got together with one of them and it ended badly I would probably kill him and then there goes the fabulous rock star lifestyle.” He kissed the top of her head. “Seriously though, I don’t want to end up in the middle of something where I would have to pick a side.”
He let her out of his grip and Liz smiled and shook her head. “But I didn’t worry about that with you and Ames.”
“Exactly. You know the two of us well enough to know that we’d work as a couple. And I know that you plus any of them equals bad things.” A yellow minivan pulled up the curb and Andy pulled open the sliding door. “We got three more coming,” he told the driver as he climbed in and sat down in the back row of seats.
“And what if I’m looking for bad things?” Liz asked as she climbed in after him. “I mean, Michael’s pretty sexy and I’m thinkin’ if he can move like that while vertical…”
Andy covered his ears with his hands. “La la la la, I can’t hear you!”
“What’s he doing?”
Liz turned to see Alex getting into the seat next to her. “Just living in a state of denial.”
“I hear it’s lovely there this time of year,” he said with a smile.
Liz laughed at his corny joke. She was just noticing that he had a beautiful smile when Mike and Jason stumbled into the cab. She leaned her head against the seat and let her eyelids fall closed as the cab started to pull away from the sidewalk. When she opened her eyes again she was met with darkness and the smell of some kind of cologne or aftershave, one that she liked but wasn’t familiar with. She looked up and realized that she was resting against someone’s shoulder, practically nuzzled into their neck. “Sorry,” she mumbled, still half asleep. She groaned and sat up. Then she saw the most stunning pair of blue eyes looking down at her.
“It’s ok,” Alex whispered.
“I didn’t drool on you, did I?”
He smiled. “No, I don’t think so.”
“Good. Where are we?”
“Just pulled up the driveway.”
“Ugh, that ride wasn’t long enough.”
“My shoulder’s that comfortable, huh?”
Liz blushed. “It wasn’t bad.”
Alex laughed and pulled open the van door. The interior lights flashed on, waking up the rest of the dozing passengers. The five of them slowly climbed out of the van and Jay stayed behind to pay while everyone else walked into the house. For the second time in twenty-four hours, Liz was stumbling into the house completely exhausted. The guys went upstairs to their rooms and she went into the downstairs bathroom to take off her make-up and wash her face. The cool water felt good on her skin. She grabbed a hand towel and patted her face dry. She caught a glimpse of herself in the mirror and was a little surprised to see that, despite her exhaustion, she was smiling.
* * * * *
Liz felt her futon shake and her eyes shot open. She rolled over just as someone started shaking her shoulder. “For f.uck’s sake, Alex!” she laughed. “It’s too early for this sh.it.”
“You gotta get up!” he said excitedly.
“What time is it?”
“Six.”
“Ugh, go away.” She covered her head with her pillow and rolled over.
“But today’s your big day,” he whispered in teasing tone. Liz smiled and swung her pillow toward his voice, firmly connecting with his face. “Hey! Watch the glasses!”
“Go back to bed, Noyes, and let me sleep. I don’t have to be to work until nine.”
“But you’ve gotta leave in an hour.”
“Urg!” Liz groaned. “Give me my glasses.” Alex rolled his eyes and placed them in her open palm. “Thank you,” Liz said as she put on her dark purple plastic frames. “Now, please explain to me why I have to leave at seven when I don’t have to be there until nine.” She sat up, her blanket wrapped around her chest, and stared daggers at him.
Alex was next to her, lying on his side and propped up on one elbow. “What time we you planning on leaving?”
She shrugged. “I dunno, maybe quarter after eight.”
“No, seriously.”
“I am serious. I can’t not be serious at six in the morning.”
“Look, all that sh.it you’ve heard about L.A. traffic is true.”
“You’re kidding me.”
“Nope,” he answered, really popping the “p.”
“Fuuuuuu.uck,” she growled.
“Aren’t you glad I’m so obnoxious?” Liz just laughed and smacked him with her pillow again. “I’m gonna throw an Eggo in the toaster. You want one?” he asked as he got off the futon.
“That’d be awesome. Thanks.”
“No prob. Just don’t go back to sleep.”
“I’m up, I promise.” She watched him disappear around the corner and into the kitchen. When she’d first decided to move out to California she’d had a few expectations but none of them were “make a new best friend.” But that’s exactly what Alex Noyes had become. The four guys each filled a spaced in her life now but for whatever reason she had bonded quickly with Alex. They were already at the point of finishing each other’s sentences after living together for a week. It was like that first week of college where you meet someone and click instantly and then you wonder why you hadn’t been missing them all along.
Liz got out of bed and started pulling her outfit for the day out of her closet. She’d decided on a pair of gray slacks with a white, button-down shirt, and form-fitting black, pin-striped vest. She quickly dressed and went into the bathroom to put in her contacts.
“Your waffle’s ready!” she heard Alex call from the kitchen.
“Be right there!” She quickly threw on some make-up and hurried into the kitchen. “Alex…” He hadn’t made her an Eggo. Instead, he’d made her real waffles, complete with sliced strawberries and whipped cream. “What’d you…?”
“I couldn’t send you off to your first day of work on an empty stomach,” he said with a smirk.
Liz shook her head in amazement as she made herself a plate. “If this whole drumming thing doesn’t work out for you, I say you open up a diner,” she said. Alex was leaning against the counter with his plate so she walked over and hopped up on the counter next to him. She smiled as she took her first bite.
“What’re you grinning about?”
“Just noticed that I’m as tall as you when I’m up here.”
“What’s it like?”
“Weird…although I like not looking up your nose when I want to see your face.” They both laughed and ate until Mike stumbled into the kitchen in just his boxer-briefs and black socks.
“Well, good morning, Mr. Bruno,” Liz said as she watched him stumble over to the pile of waffles.
He put one on a plate along with some berries and headed back towards the door. He stopped, though, and turned back to face them. “Can you two please keep it down?”
“Sorry,” Liz said, trying not to laugh at the half-asleep, half-naked man that had just stumbled through the kitchen.
“It’s alright,” he mumbled. He turned to leave again but stopped as if he’d just remembered something. “You,” he pointed at Liz, “kick a.ss today. And you,” he added, pointing at Alex, “clean this sh.it up.” And with that he stumbled out of the kitchen.
When they heard him climb up the stairs, Alex and Liz couldn’t hold it in any longer. “What the f.uck was that?” Liz finally managed to say through her laughter.
“That was ‘Hangover Mike,’” Alex answered, wiping tears from his eyes.
“I think I love him.”
“Oh, if he could only hear you say that.”
“Shut up,” Liz said, using Alex’s shoulder to brace herself as she hopped off the counter. Liz and Mike had had a playful flirtation going on since the day she’d moved in, something that amused Jay and Alex and made Andy a little nervous. For Liz’s part it was all in good fun but the guys new that the moment she decided it wasn’t just for sh.its and giggles, Mike would be the happiest man in the house.
“You gotta watch yourself with him. He’s gonna start writing songs and buying you flowers,” Alex warned.
“Next time he tries to get you to hook us up you tell him that I think he’s a dirty old man,” Liz laughed.
Alex chuckled and grabbed Liz’s shoulder as she started to step away. “Hold on one second.”
“I’m gonna be late…”
“I just gotta give my girl a hug,” he said as he pulled her against him.
Liz could feel a warmth go through her body to her fingertips as she hugged him back. When he released her she raised herself up on her tippy-toes and lightly kissed his cheek. “Thanks for this. I’ll see you tonight.”
As she walked out of the house, Alex felt his hand involuntarily rise up and touch the spot where Liz’s lips had just been. When his brain caught up with his body he rubbed his face, trying to wipe off the blot of lip gloss she’d left behind, before starting to clean up the kitchen.
